When Matt & his parents contacted me to start planning his proposal I was so excited! Proposals are so much fun to photograph and I couldn’t wait. Their first question was, “Everything is happening after dark so there won’t be any natural light, is that okay?” Everyone who knows me knows I LOOOOOVE getting to experiment with lighting and use my lighting equipment to create beautiful images, so when I heard everything was happening well after sunset I couldn’t have been more excited. What made this even more fun was that I was able to bring my dad along as my lighting assistant! I always bring an assistant with me to shoots where light work is involved so that I have help setting up the lights and don’t spend what could be portrait time setting up the lighting exactly right all by myself. The first picture below is him helping me test my gear before our couple arrived on site! He said it was fascinating to watch me work, and I loved having him along for the ride.
As soon as I saw the carriage pull up, I could tell Elaine had absolutely NO idea what we were up to. She was entirely convinced the “surprise” Matt had planned was just the fact that they got a carriage ride, and was not even a little bit expecting to end the night with a ring on her finger. As they got out of the carriage Matt started to explain that they weren’t in town for a convention like he’d told her, but that he had something else planned all along. He began to kneel and pull the ring out of his pocket, and before he even got half the question out, Elaine was shouting YES!!! It was one of the sweetest proposals I have ever been able to document and I was nearly in tears right along with them.
We all hugged and celebrated for a few minutes and then Matt and I told Elaine the surprise wasn’t over yet! It was time for their engagement session too! We spent the next hour all over downtown Charleston’s waterfront district taking their engagement photos and lighting up the night. It was an absolutely perfect night, and I am OBSESSED with every single image!
